Today's Weather

Here is a program that I thought some of you may be interested in. It is called the Weather Bug. Weather Bug is the ONLY SOURCE for LIVE neighborhood weather on your PC desktop direct from AWS Worldwide School WeatherNet™, part of the world's largest automated real-time weather network.

TORNADOES
A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending between, and in contact with, a cloud and the surface of the earth. Tornadoes are generally spawned by thunderstorms, though they have been known to occur without the presence of lightning. Tornadoes can come one at a time, or in clusters, and they can vary greatly in length, width, direction of travel, and speed. They can leave a path 50 yards wide or over a mile wide. They may touch down for only a matter of seconds, or remain in contact with the ground for over an hour.

LIGHTNING

Lightning Safety

1. If you hear thunder, get inside a home, a large building, or an all-metal automobile. Do not use the telephone (except for emergencies).

2. If you are caught outside, do not stand underneath any tall isolated stucture (like a tall tree). Avoid projecting above the surrounding landscape. In the woods, crouch in a low area under a thick growth of small trees. In open areas, go to a low place, like a ditch or valley.

3. Get off or away from open water, tractors, and other metal farm equipment or small metal vehicles, such as motorcycles, bicycles.

4. When golfing. Get off your golf cart, put down golf clubs and take off golf shoes. Stay away from wire fences, clotheslines, metal pipes, and rails. If you are in a group in the open, spread out, keeping people several yards apart.

One of the most magnificent natural phenomena, lightning is often believed to be an infrequent occurrence. In actuality, lightning hits the earth an estimated 100 times per second on average, or 8.6 million times a day. It is estimated that the U.S. alone receives as many as 20 million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes per year from perhaps 100,000 thunderstorms.
